RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a joint strike on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory operated by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The site, located using reconnaissance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just above the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a number of entry passages providing entry to the site... initial indications suggest the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the strike late on Saturday and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - also known as Daesh - enforced extremist governance over large swathes of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation shows British leadership, and determination to work closely with our partners, to stamp out any revival of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," UK Defence Secretary the minister said.

RAF aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syria to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of IS subsequent to its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to every member of British forces participating in this operation for their professionalism and their valour," he said. "They were part of a great many British troops deployed over the holidays. This operation, to remove terrorist threats who pose a risk to our safety, shows how our armed forces are ready to step up, all year round, keeping Britain secure domestically and powerful internationally."

In December, the American forces conducted what it called a "massive strike" against IS targets in the country, following an ambush killed two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. says Daesh still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Syria and Iraq.
