European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted figures who have been central to efforts to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the move.

The restrictions were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
