Early Saturday, reports emerged of significant explosions shaking the Iranian capital, following claims from Israeli officials that it had conducted a preemptive strike.
Powerful Explosions and Plumes of Smoke Reported in Central Tehran
According to on-the-ground reports, two powerful explosions were heard in Tehran on Saturday morning. Simultaneously, columns of thick smoke were seen billowing over central and eastern districts of the Iranian capital.
“The nature of explosions indicates that this is a strike involving missiles,” a media outlet reported, though it did not initially offer further details.
Context: Escalating Tensions and Prior Events
This event occurs against a backdrop of severely escalated tensions in the Middle East. Major events preceding this strike include:
- US Military Buildup: A massive build-up of US naval forces in the region, featuring the repositioning of carrier strike groups.
- Diplomatic Negotiations: Latest discussions between the United States and Iranian officials on Tehran's nuclear programme concluded without a deal, with indications of further talks planned.
- Official Rhetoric: Prior to the strike, a prominent American figure had labeled Iran as “the leading state sponsor of terrorism” and issued warnings regarding its weapons development.
- Ultimatum: Reportedly, a deadline of 10 to 15 days had been given to Iran to resolve the atomic standoff or face serious repercussions.
Reaction from Tehran
In response to prior accusations, Iranian officials had charged the United States of spreading “big lies” about its missiles programme. They rejected assertions about missile development and protest deaths as unfounded.
The situation remains fast-moving, with additional reports anticipated as the situation develops.
