The Legendary Anime Ends a 27-Year Era in the Coming Year

It's the end of an iconic period for ongoing anime, with Toei Animation revealing a new production schedule for the beloved series, which has run continuously for over a quarter-century and included dozens of filler arcs. Starting in the new year, once the Egghead Island arc wraps up, the anime will go on a quarterly break until spring, when the next major arc kicks off.

Updated Production Plan

From now on, One Piece will produce a pair of cours every annually for a maximum of two dozen installments. Toei states this will enable the anime to “explore further into the heart of the ONE PIECE world — incorporating more material, rhythm, and pacing of the original manga.” However, producers conclude by hinting at “exciting surprises” during the hiatus period, which suggests additional One Piece content, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, scheduled to debut during this gap.

Previous Hiatus Benefits

The One Piece anime had a half-year pause that started in late 2024 and concluded in April 2025. The hiatus was for the animators to improve the animation quality and let the manga to get further ahead to avoid a faster anime pace and lengthy recap episodes. The anime couldn't benefit more from this break, and it has managed to supply fans with countless fight scenes, high-quality animation, and reduced non-canon content than previously.

Embracing Seasonal Format

Although a few summary installments sprouted up during this season, the positive effects of this updated approach greatly outweigh the occasional interruption in the story. This also gives the original work, which is currently in the thick of the Elbaph arc, to extend its lead on the adaptation. According to the announcement, this may lead to a single installment of the series covering a single manga chapter, with some alternatively covering more material or more to compensate for time.

This concludes of an era for Japanese animation, as One Piece is the last big series to abandon the old-school way of production, which focused on airing for almost the entire year. It's the reason why classics such as Naruto, and naturally One Piece have so many side stories, and the quality of the animation can change drastically between installments and the following. Nowadays, series creation is organized in cours, with one or two maximum releasing each year, enabling better quality and greater accuracy to the original work.
