The US Justice Department have entered the fray in a legal challenge brought forward by California Republicans, aiming to halt the California's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This legal action, submitted to a US district court, challenges the redistricting plan championed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was developed in reaction against a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"The state's electoral map represents a brazen power grab that tramples on civil rights and mocks the democratic process," stated the nation's top law enforcement official.
Democrats have expressed confidence that the redistricting plan will survive court challenges.
"These opponents lost at the ballot box and they are likely to face defeat in the judicial system," stated a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit claims that California's map improperly used racial considerations to significantly advantage Hispanic voters in violation of the federal constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a substitute to advance political interests, but that is precisely what the California General Assembly did with the redistricting measure," stated a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the major response by Democrats in the ongoing redistricting war that started with Texas and has spread across multiple states.
Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed voter approval, which it received with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
National Implications
Democrats need to gain just a small number of Republican-held House seats to take control of the House of Representatives in next year's congressional elections.
The political group controlling the controlling share will influence the remaining period of the current administration, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its political program or face resistance, congressional probes and possible additional obstacles.
